Ashiana was the brainchild of a group of like-minded professionals who identified a gap in society and particularly within the Asian community. There was no inclusion of families and people with learning difficulties. No where for them to socialise or be accepted. 25 years ago, within the Asian community but also in the wider community, there was huge stigma and prejudice associated with people who were “different”, there was no acceptance or inclusion. Asian families would often hide their children, not go out, stay indoors, out of fear of rejection and literal finger pointing. How times have changed!

Ashiana was launched on 20 September 2000 and gained Charitable status in 2008.

Over the years, Ashiana has aimed to change the way in which we think about and consider learning difficulties. Ashiana’s mission is to support and empower whilst educating and inspiring social change. We have been able to make positive changes to the lives of our members and their carers.

Initially, Ashiana engaged in monthly activities and after becoming a fully-fledged charity, we incorporated weekly activities as well. Over the years, Ashiana has gone from strength to strength and has won awards in recognition for the work within the Asian community and wider reach, having been invited to the Houses of Parliament to celebrate winning the Kids Count Inspiration Award, which recognises organisations and individuals that have been responsible for inspiring young people in their communities. What an honour it was!

Our belief of helping others transcends caste, creed or colour, thus, everyone should be treated with the same warmth and respect. At the centre of our thinking is this, everyone is born equal. The only thing that sets us apart and divides us is our own prejudices, our own weaknesses and our own lack of confidence. We don’t believe that our disabilities or difficulties limit us or bind us in anyway, but rather create unique and special individuals. Each capable of achieving whatever our hearts desire.

Our objectives have always been:

  1. To break down barriers

  2. To inspire social change & Integration

  3. To instil confidence

Ashiana runs various activities which include yoga, Bollywood dancing, speech and language. We’ve organised day trips and holidays. We have partnered with various organisations and charities, and we are grateful for the support we have received and continue to receive from our partner organisations.

Ashiana has achieved a tremendous amount in the last 25 years, from performing in Trafalgar Square for Diwali in the Park, taking part in National Seva Day projects and travelling abroad to the Isle of Wight and all the way to India. Our reach is far and wide, and getting wider! There is no stopping a cause which is rooted in such passion and determination from all those involved. Unfortunately, there is still much work to be done in society and we will continue to bang the drum of acceptance until the day comes where there are no barriers and where people of all colour, religion and ability are fully accepted into society, main stream education, the work force and beyond!

Ashiana, the home of friendship and love
